A devastating industrial incident occurred in Ulsan, South Korea, on Thursday afternoon when a 60-meter (196-foot) boiler tower collapsed at a decommissioned thermal power plant. The accident resulted in three fatalities and at least five workers trapped under the wreckage, as reported by local officials.
There were nine workers present on site when the tower unexpectedly fell. Emergency teams successfully rescued two individuals promptly, but one was later pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital on Friday morning.
A second deceased worker was discovered hours later, while medical personnel confirmed the loss of a third individual still buried in the debris. Concerns persist for the two remaining workers, who have yet to be located, with fears that they may not have survived.
Rescue efforts are hindered by precarious debris and hazardous materials in the area. Operations were paused on Friday morning due to concerns over potential secondary collapses, necessitating stabilization attempts before they could continue.
Kim Jeong-shik, a representative of the Ulsan Fire Department, noted that over 340 rescue personnel and numerous vehicles have been sent to the scene, equipped with thermal imaging cameras, search dogs, endoscopes, and other specialty equipment. “The site is laden with asbestos and glass fibers, creating a tightly confined working environment that forces workers to manually clear debris,” Kim stated during a briefing.
In response to the crisis, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has ordered the mobilization of all relevant personnel and resources to assist in rescuing those trapped. He highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of first responders navigating these perilous conditions.
The power plant had ceased operations in 2021, following four decades of service. Authorities indicated that the boiler tower, one of three onsite, had been structurally compromised due to ongoing demolition efforts, which may have played a role in the collapse.
As rescue attempts remain ongoing, this tragedy has sparked renewed discussions about safety protocols in demolition work and regulations surrounding industrial sites in South Korea, a nation grappling with numerous workplace incidents despite enhanced safety measures.
