Fatima Bosch Crowned Miss Universe 2025 Amidst Controversy

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a dramatic conclusion to a highly controversial pageant season, Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, has been officially crowned Miss Universe in Thailand. The 25-year-old beauty queen faced numerous challenges leading up to the event, including a significant walkout from a pre-pageant occasion after an official publicly reprimanded her, amid threats of disqualification for her interactions with fellow contestants.

Just a week later, the competition saw the resignation of two judges, one of whom accused the organizing team of manipulation. Despite the uproar, Bosch emerged victorious, with Thailand’s Praveenar Singh as runner-up and Venezuela, the Philippines, and Côte d’Ivoire making up the top five contestants.

This year marked the 74th edition of the Miss Universe pageant, renowned as one of the longest-running global beauty competitions, having been established in 1952. Analysts suggest that the conflicts reflect deeper cultural and management disparities between the Thai and Mexican teams. Hosting for the fourth time, Thailand positioned its contestant as a frontrunner.

Behind-the-Scenes Drama

Organized by Thai media mogul Nawat Itsaragrasil, known for his work with Miss Grand International, the pageant had operational oversight from Mexican entrepreneur Raul Rocha. During a pre-pageant event, Nawat reprimanded Bosch for not posting promotional materials, triggering her walkout and invoking support from other participants.

The Miss Universe Organisation labelled the incident as “malicious,” prompting Rocha to remotely urge Nawat to cease his conduct. Nawat later expressed regret, attributing the episode to misunderstandings, as an international oversight team was dispatched to supervise the proceedings.

Judges Resign Amid Allegations

In subsequent developments, Lebanese-French musician Omar Harfouch and former French football star Claude Makelele stepped down from the judging panel, with Harfouch alleging that finalists were preselected. The organization refuted this, asserting that the independent Beyond the Crown initiative functions independently from the main event.

During the preliminary evening gown segment, the event was further marred by drama when Miss Jamaica suffered a fall, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Leadership Changes and Inclusivity Initiatives

Recent leadership transitions have reshaped the Miss Universe organization. Thai transgender media mogul Anne Jakrajutatip resigned as CEO just before the pageant, with Guatemalan diplomat Mario Bucaro stepping in. Under Jakrajutatip’s leadership, new inclusivity measures were introduced, allowing transgender women, married women, and mothers to enter, while lifting age restrictions.

Experts highlight that this dual management between Mexico and Thailand has caused confusion among fans and participants, impacting the brand's coherence and trustworthiness.

Miss Universe's Future Outlook

Though broadcast viewership has diminished, social media platforms have turned previous titleholders into influential figures. The Thai organizing committee appears focused on enhancing revenue through live merchandise, whereas Latin American audiences continue to treat contestants as media personalities.

Despite the surrounding controversies, past Miss Universe titleholders emphasize the pageant’s commitment to empowering women. They assert that the essence of Miss Universe is only fulfilled through a tangible support system for its contestants.
