At least 19 people were killed and 16 others were injured early on Wednesday when two four-story buildings collapsed in the Al-Mustaqbal neighborhood of Fez, a historic city in northeastern Morocco. The buildings were home to eight families, and the sudden collapse left the local community shocked and worried about the safety of nearby structures.
Local authorities, security forces, and rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene after being informed of the disaster. They immediately began searching for survivors trapped under the rubble and worked tirelessly through the night to save as many people as possible. The injured were transported to the university hospital in Fez for urgent medical care, and officials are closely monitoring their condition.
The collapse has raised concerns about older buildings in Morocco, especially in crowded residential areas. Fez, a former capital and cultural hub, has many historic and densely populated neighborhoods, making safety inspections crucial to prevent such tragic incidents. Authorities have urged residents to report any signs of structural damage in their buildings.
Most of Morocco’s population, along with its main financial, industrial, and infrastructure centers, are concentrated in the northwest. Meanwhile, other regions rely on tourism, farming, and fisheries for income. The ongoing rescue efforts highlight the need for improved building safety and emergency preparedness to protect residents in urban areas.
