FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has confirmed that Formula 1 stakeholders have agreed on a set of important regulatory updates for the 2026 season.
The decision was made during an online meeting between the FIA, team principals, CEOs of power unit manufacturers, and Formula One Management (FOM). The talks focused on improving safety, performance balance, and racing quality.
The agreed changes include updates to qualifying energy management, race safety systems, power control rules, and improved measures for wet-weather racing. These updates aim to make racing safer and more competitive.
One major change is an increase in the number of events where lower energy limits can be applied, rising from 8 to 12 races. This will allow better adjustment based on different circuit conditions.
The FIA also introduced measures to reduce excessive speed differences between cars while keeping overtaking possible and maintaining performance standards.
For better visibility in poor weather, rear light systems have been simplified. This will help drivers react more quickly and improve safety during wet races.
Race start systems will also be tested further during the Miami Grand Prix weekend before final approval.
The final set of proposals will now go for an electronic vote by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. If approved, most changes will be implemented before the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem praised all involved, including FIA staff, teams, drivers, and manufacturers, for their cooperation and quick decision-making.
He said safety and fair competition remain the FIA’s top priorities, and the changes are based on data collected from the first races of the season.
The FIA Region I Spring Meeting in Budva, Montenegro, where these discussions were highlighted, also concluded with wider talks on safe and sustainable mobility across 102 FIA member clubs.
