FIFA Confirms First Women’s Club World Cup Scheduled for 2028

FIFA Confirms First Women’s Club World Cup Scheduled for 2028

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

FIFA has announced that the first-ever Women’s Club World Cup will take place in January 2028. The tournament will run from January 5 to January 30. FIFA has not yet named the host country, but the dates suggest the event will likely be held in a warm-weather nation. The decision was approved during a FIFA Council meeting held in Doha, Qatar.

The new competition will feature 16 teams from around the world. It follows the expanded men’s Club World Cup and aims to grow women’s football at the club level. The tournament schedule may clash with some European domestic leagues, such as England’s Women’s Super League, but it will not affect the Women’s Champions League, which pauses during January. The United States’ NWSL will also be in its offseason during this time.

The tournament format includes four groups of four teams each, followed by knockout matches starting from the quarterfinal stage. In addition, a six-team “play-in” round will be held before the main tournament, with three teams earning a place in the final 16-team competition.

Europe will have the largest presence with five guaranteed teams. Asia, Africa, South America, and the Concacaf region will each have two teams. The remaining teams, including one from Oceania, will take part in the play-in stage. FIFA said the tournament is designed to increase global exposure for women’s club football and strengthen competition between top teams worldwide.
