Australia Clinches Ashes Series with Final Test Victory; Khawaja Bids Farewell

Australia Clinches Ashes Series with Final Test Victory; Khawaja Bids Farewell

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a thrilling conclusion to the Ashes series, Australia triumphed over England by five wickets in the final Test on Thursday, securing a commanding 4-1 series win. This match served as a memorable farewell for Usman Khawaja, who announced his retirement after a distinguished career that featured 88 Test appearances.

Facing a target of 160 runs set by England, the Australian side encountered early jitters, losing five wickets during their innings. However, they managed to chase down the runs comfortably after lunch on day five, with significant contributions from Cameron Green, who remained not out with 22 runs, and Alex Carey, who added 16 runs.

Australia's innings began shakily, with openers Travis Head and Jake Weatherald scoring 29 and 34 runs respectively before perishing. Captain Steve Smith chipped in with 12, while Khawaja, in his farewell Test, scored a mere six runs.

A pivotal performance came from Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 37 runs after being dropped at 20 but was unfortunately run out, giving England a brief glimmer of hope at 121 for five.

Despite this setback, Australia's win was not in jeopardy. Earlier, England's innings was bolstered by Jacob Bethell, who scored a dazzling 154 runs, yet the team was dismissed for 342 runs—insufficient to halt Australia's dominance during the series.

Australia's consistent resilience with bat and ball throughout the Ashes culminated in this fitting finale. Usman Khawaja's retirement was celebrated by fans and teammates, honoring a career filled with significant contributions to Australian cricket.
