Fleetwood and Rai at the Top in Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Post by : Meena Hassan

At the midway point of the 2025 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Tommy Fleetwood and compatriot Aaron Rai are tied for the lead following impressive outings at Yas Links on day two.

Fleetwood, who shared the lead after the opening round, kicked off his second round with an impressive start, scoring three consecutive birdies within his initial holes. The reigning FedEx Cup champion and two-time event winner concluded the round with a score of 66, achieving seven birdies alongside a single bogey on the 15th, placing him at 14 under par.

Joining Fleetwood at the top is World Number 30 Aaron Rai, who delivered an impeccable round of 64. Rai's performance featured five birdies and a sensational albatross on the par-five second hole, where he holed a six-iron from 218 yards, captivating the spectators with this extraordinary achievement.

They lead by two strokes over their closest competitors, Andy Sullivan, Nicolai Højgaard, and Richard Sterne, with 2019 champion Shane Lowry trailing by another stroke.

Fleetwood started the round in a five-way tie but was briefly outpaced as early performer Nacho Elvira executed a solid front nine. Nonetheless, Fleetwood quickly regained his lead, making birdies on the first three holes. He took sole command after a birdie on the par-five seventh, which he extended further with another birdie on the 11th.

Lowry matched Fleetwood’s score with a birdie on the 13th but then dropped down the leaderboard after a double bogey on the 14th. Fleetwood expanded his lead to two shots with a birdie on the 14th but encountered a setback with a bogey on the 15th. He bounced back with a birdie on the 16th, keeping him tied for the lead with Rai.

With two rounds remaining, the competition for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship title promises to be exhilarating.
