Tragic Flooding in Vietnam Claims 90 Lives, Thousands Affected

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Since the end of October, relentless rain has led to catastrophic flooding in south-central Vietnam, severely impacting popular tourist destinations and mountainous areas. As of November 23, the Environment Ministry has confirmed that the death toll has tragically reached 90, with 12 individuals still unaccounted for.

The central Dak Lak province has been the hardest hit, recording over 60 fatalities since November 16. Entire neighborhoods have been submerged, forcing many residents to evacuate their homes. The coastal city of Nha Trang and the mountainous town of Da Lat have also faced significant disruptions, with landslides damaging critical roads and halting transportation.

Numerous major highways remain obstructed due to floodwaters and landslides, while some railway services are suspended, impeding rescue and recovery operations. Currently, more than 129,000 individuals are left without power as of November 23, a drop from over a million who experienced outages last week.

According to the Environment Ministry, economic damages across five provinces are estimated to be around 343 million dollars. While Vietnam is accustomed to heavy rains from June to September, experts attribute the increase in storm frequency and intensity to human-induced climate change.

The national statistics office reports that natural disasters, including floods and storms, have resulted in 279 fatalities or disappearances in Vietnam this year alone, leading to damages exceeding 2 billion dollars.

As the rainy season nears its conclusion, Vietnamese authorities are intensifying rescue and relief efforts, working to restore vital infrastructure and assist impacted communities.
