Jakarta, Indonesia, November 30, 2025 – The tragic consequences of floods and landslides due to cyclonic rainfall in Sumatra, Indonesia have left 303 individuals dead, as reported by the head of the disaster mitigation agency on Saturday, marking a dramatic increase from the previous toll of 174. With tens of thousands displaced, rescue operations continue amidst difficult conditions.
The severe weather conditions, intensified by an unusual tropical storm in the Malacca Strait, have also affected regions in Malaysia and southern Thailand. In Thailand, the latest updates show that 162 fatalities have been recorded due to the extensive flooding, up from 145, according to government representative Siripong Angkasakulkiat.
In Sumatra, approximately 80,000 people have been evacuated, yet at least 279 individuals are reported missing across three provinces, according to Suharyanto, head of Indonesia’s disaster response agency. Rescue teams are deploying helicopters to deliver vital aid to northern Sumatra, where landslides have disrupted road access and communication networks.
“We are working to reopen the route from North Tapanuli to Sibolga, which has been severely isolated for three days,” Suharyanto informed journalists. Authorities are also focused on clearing landslide debris to facilitate relief efforts, as many remain trapped and urgently require food and medical assistance. Additional military support will enhance these efforts beginning Sunday.
The Central Tapanuli area has witnessed desperate residents attempting to secure supplies, illustrating the heightened strain on affected populations. Coordinated efforts for evacuations, aid provision, and medical support are ongoing amid these challenging circumstances.
The catastrophic floods and landslides impacting Indonesia and Thailand reveal the urgent threat posed by cyclones in Southeast Asia, displacing thousands, destroying infrastructure, and leaving communities in distress. Emergency responders are pressing residents to remain vigilant as forecasts predict continued heavy rainfall across the region.
