The Florida Gators triumphed over the Miami Hurricanes with a score of 82-68 in the Jacksonville Hoops Showdown, handing Miami their initial loss of the season. This anticipated matchup was marked by intense competition, and Florida showcased their skills through a solid offensive and defensive display. With this victory, the Gators improved to a 3-1 season record, matching Miami's record of 3-1 after the defeat.
Alex Condon played a pivotal role, scoring 19 points and securing seven rebounds before fouling out late in the second half. He shot efficiently, sinking 8 of 12 attempts, including two three-pointers, which helped Florida control pivotal moments in the game. His presence under the basket proved troublesome for Miami's defense.
Thomas Haugh also stood out, ending the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, effectively hitting three-pointers at key times to provide Florida with crucial momentum. Rueben Chinyelu contributed significantly with 16 points and 12 rebounds, achieving a double-double. Despite his early exit due to fouls, his dominance in the paint assisted Florida in taking an early lead. Urban Klavzar contributed 15 points with impressive outside shooting, making 4 of 7 from three-point range.
For the Hurricanes, standout Malik Reneau, a former Florida recruit, led in scoring with 22 points and 11 rebounds before also fouling out. He fought hard in the paint, keeping Miami competitive, particularly in the first half. Tru Washington added 16 points, while Trey Donaldson chimed in with 11 points, four rebounds, and six assists. Nonetheless, Miami faced challenges at the free-throw line, only converting 56%, which hindered their ability to stay in contention.
Miami began the game strong, courtesy of a layup from Washington. Yet, Florida quickly took charge with Condon's three-pointer initiating a 9-0 run. Miami countered with five successful field goals, including a three-pointer from Donaldson, briefly leading 13-12.
The first half saw both teams trading baskets. Florida surged ahead as Klavzar netted three free throws, followed by Condon’s putback for a 26-21 advantage with six minutes to go. Miami attempted to rally, but Haugh’s deep three broadened Florida's lead to 39-29 at the break, with Condon leading all scorers at 15 points.
After halftime, Miami ignited a 7-0 run, bringing the score to 44-41. Washington's layups fueled their hopes for a comeback, but Florida's superior teamwork and ball movement stymied their efforts. Even as Chinyelu and Condon faced foul issues early in the second half, Florida's offense thrived. Haugh’s three-point play, along with another long-range bucket, extended the Gators' lead to 67-50 with under eight minutes left.
Florida maintained their grip on the game, while Miami struggled to score consistently. With strategic play and solid teamwork, the Gators sealed the victory, demonstrating their balance, strength, and determination.
