Fredericton to Implement Red-Light Cameras for Enhanced Traffic Safety

Post by : Meena Hassan

Fredericton is set to trial the use of red-light cameras at four critical intersections aiming to boost road safety and diminish traffic violations. This initiative follows recent provincial legislation which allows municipalities to adopt automated traffic enforcement techniques, including both red-light and speed cameras.

Officials assert that these intersections are notorious for T-bone accidents stemming from running red lights and speeding. The areas being evaluated include the intersections of Regent Street with Wayne Squibb Boulevard, Smythe Street with Prospect Street, Queen Street with Westmorland, as well as the Ring Road with Maple Street. Depending on the accident statistics after one year, the city might relocate the cameras.

These cameras document vehicles that breach the red light, with police confirming infringements before issuing fines to the vehicle's registered owner. Studies indicate a reduction in fatal accidents at signalized intersections by as much as 21% when these cameras are in use.

Community members like Jeff Jardine, who suffered injuries from a red-light incident in 2016, are supportive of this initiative. “If it can prevent serious accidents, it’s worth installing red-light cameras,” he remarked.

While the cost of setup may exceed $100,000 for each camera, alongside annual maintenance, city authorities are evaluating various options and possible revenue-sharing frameworks to ensure the program’s sustainability.

The city is in the process of reviewing all proposals and anticipates sharing the detailed plans once the pilot project is confirmed.
