Severe Winter Storm Set to Impact Millions with Ice and Snow Across the U.S.

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A major winter storm is on track to deliver freezing conditions, significant snowfall, and hazardous ice to vast regions of the central and eastern United States this weekend. Meteorological services anticipate that approximately 150 million people—nearly half the country's population—will feel the storm's impact, leading to potential travel hazards, power outages, and serious safety concerns.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will extend from the Central Plains towards the Eastern Seaboard, with certain mountainous locations in the Appalachians and West Virginia forecasted to receive up to 20 inches of snow. Various eastern states will see a hazardous mix of snow and freezing rain, increasing the chances of icy roads and the collapse of trees and power lines.

Meteorologists caution that the frigid temperatures accompanying the storm will be severe. Brian Hurley from the Weather Prediction Center noted that half of the American populace is currently under a weather advisory, thanks to the mix of heavy snow and intense cold. In northern regions, Arctic air from Canada is set to plunge temperatures significantly below normal levels.

Major cities are bracing for heavy snowfall, with New York City, Boston, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., expected to receive between 4 to 10 inches of wet snow beginning Saturday. Washington’s temperatures are predicted to dip into the low 20s Fahrenheit, while Boston may experience frigid overnight lows near 7 degrees. Conditions in Chicago are expected to be especially severe, with temperatures falling below zero and wind chills potentially hitting 30 degrees below zero.

State and local authorities have initiated emergency protocols. In New York State, a ‘Code Blue’ has been activated, compelling shelters to extend operations to ensure that homeless individuals have access to warmth and safety. Officials are advising residents to curtail travel and to ready themselves for possible power outages.

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm's arrival. Additional crews and equipment have been dispatched to manage traffic, tackle accidents, and restore power if outages occur. The governor has urged residents to remain informed, avoid unnecessary travel, and heed local advisories.

The storm's effects on agriculture may be mixed. Experts suggest that the accumulated snowfall might aid dormant winter wheat crops in parts of Oklahoma facing drought, though harsh cold temperatures could jeopardize crops not shielded by snow. Livestock in the Southern Plains could also experience stress due to icy and cold weather.

In southern regions, ice is expected to be the dire threat rather than snow, with areas ranging from Central Virginia to Northern Texas potentially facing up to half an inch of ice, posing dangers for motorists and causing widespread power outages.

Despite the harsh forecast, some residents continue their daily routines with caution. Business owners in affected cities are investing in extra heating solutions, while hardware stores in places like Chicago report an uptick in sales of space heaters.

Forecasters predict that the storm will start to dissipate from most regions by late Sunday or early Monday, although the extreme cold may linger, especially in northern Plains. Officials continue to urge the public to stay indoors when feasible, dress warmly, and check on vulnerable neighbors as this severe winter event unfolds across the country.
