In a historic moment for Africa, Johannesburg hosted its inaugural G20 Summit, culminating with a joint declaration that underlined the necessity for "multilateral cooperation" and a commitment to critical global challenges such as climate change and economic disparities.
Despite the United States' boycott stemming from contentious claims regarding South Africa, leaders from major economies concurred on prioritizing collaboration over individual differences.
At the summit's conclusion, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the significance of dialogue and the need for active multilateral institutions. He stated, “Our shared goals are more important than our disagreements.”
Following leadership from countries like Indonesia, India, and Brazil in recent years, this year's gathering was a pivotal moment for Africa, bringing critical global issues like climate change and systemic inequality to the forefront.
Delegates achieved agreement on fostering "just, comprehensive, and lasting peace" in conflict-affected areas including Ukraine, Sudan, and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Particularly, the focus on Sudan highlights the summit's readiness to address enduring conflicts.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva dismissed concerns over the absence of the US, proclaiming that multilateralism is “more vibrant than ever.” Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that while the US's absence was unfortunate, the summit indicated a realignment in global relations, fostering new alliances between emerging and established powers.
The planned handover of the G20 presidency, initially set for the summit's conclusion, has been delayed until next week, to be coordinated by junior officials. The next summit will be held in the US in 2026, likely at President Trump’s Florida golf resort.
The Johannesburg summit reinforced the G20's evolution into a platform for tackling not only economic issues but also global crises and enhancing cooperation across nations.
