Coach Galthie Urges Improvements Despite France's Victory Over Australia

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Fabien Galthie, the head coach of France’s rugby team, candidly expressed concerns regarding his squad's performance after their recent victory against Australia in the Autumn series. Although they secured a win with a score of 48-33, Galthie believes there is a significant path ahead for the team to recover their peak form demonstrated during the previous World Cup cycle.

The match was part of the Autumn international fixtures, where France began robustly yet exhibited vulnerabilities, especially in the first half marked by numerous penalties. The halftime score stood at 19-19, indicative of the discipline and defensive challenges facing the team. Galthie acknowledged these areas as critical factors restraining France from achieving top-tier performance.

Galthie drew a comparison to the past, referencing four years ago when France was a leading contender during the 2023 World Cup, recording 24 victories in 26 matches. This year, however, the team has encountered inconsistencies, facing a tough defeat against South Africa (32-17) alongside wins over Fiji and Australia that lacked convincing execution.

The absence of captain Antoine Dupont, sidelined due to a long-term injury, has complicated the team's dynamics, affecting its stability and cohesion. Galthie highlighted the alarming trend of conceding 12 tries across three matches and a troubling number of penalties—particularly within their 22-meter area during the game against Australia—indicating considerable improvements are needed.

Despite these hurdles, Galthie holds a positive outlook, recognizing the strong competition within the squad and the potential of emerging players like Nicolas Depoortere, a center who has excelled with four tries in the last two tests, heralding hope for the team’s direction.

With an eye on the future, France is gearing up for an essential match against Ireland in the upcoming Six Nations tournament starting in February. Galthie and his team are dedicated to enhancing their discipline, defensive strategies, and overall performance consistency to regain their competitive edge.

In conclusion, while France's recent win over Australia is a step forward, Coach Galthie recognizes the extensive work required to reach their optimal performance level. The emphasis will remain on addressing weaknesses and fostering a robust squad for the approaching rugby season.
