India Coach Gambhir Faces Questions After Heavy Test Defeats

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir came under strong criticism after the national cricket team suffered a tough 2-0 Test series defeat against South Africa. The second Test ended in a huge loss by 408 runs on Wednesday, marking India’s biggest defeat by runs in Test history. This series also added to India’s struggle at home, where they have now lost five out of their last seven Test matches.

The result has triggered debates about Gambhir’s role and decisions as head coach. When asked in the post-match press conference whether he believed he was the right person to continue leading the team, Gambhir responded calmly. He said that the final decision rests with the BCCI, adding that he has always placed Indian cricket above himself. Gambhir reminded reporters that his priority has always been the success of the national team, not his personal position.

Gambhir took over as head coach after the T20 World Cup victory last year, replacing Rahul Dravid. Since then, India have won some matches but also faced major setbacks, including 10 losses in 19 Tests. His contract is valid until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but recent performances have raised concerns about the team’s direction. Despite the criticism, Gambhir defended his record, highlighting that India achieved a drawn Test series in England under his leadership. He said people often remember failures but forget earlier achievements like the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup wins.

One of the biggest challenges India is facing at the moment is the retirement of senior players. Cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepped away from T20 cricket after the World Cup win and later retired from Test cricket as well. Their absence has left a big gap in experience and stability. Following their retirement, young batter Shubman Gill was made the new Test captain. Under his leadership, India managed a 2-2 series draw in England and later won a 2-0 series against the West Indies at home.

However, India’s problems increased during the South Africa series when Gill got injured after the first Test and could not play the second. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant had to take over as captain of a young and developing team. India struggled badly with their batting throughout the series. Their highest score came in the first Test in Guwahati, where they managed only 201 runs. In the final match, they were bowled out for 140 while chasing a massive target of 549.

Gambhir refused to blame conditions or injuries. However, he pointed out that many of India’s current batters are still new to Test cricket. He said that four or five players in the top order have played fewer than 15 Tests, and they are still learning. He believes these young players have talent but need more time and experience to perform consistently.

India also faced unexpected difficulties in their spin department. Usually strong at home, Indian spinners were outperformed by South Africa’s Simon Harmer, who took an impressive 17 wickets with his off-spin. Gambhir explained that India is going through a transition in both batting and spin bowling. This makes the situation unusual and challenging because both departments are rebuilding at the same time.

He urged fans and critics to be patient, saying that the young players have the skill, the talent, and the ability to become strong performers in the future. Gambhir added that growth takes time and the team needs support during this rebuilding phase.
