U.S. Team Led by Gauff and Fritz Defends Title at United Cup 2026

Post by : Meena Hassan

The United States is poised to defend its crown in the United Cup, featuring the dynamic duo of third-ranked Coco Gauff and sixth-ranked Taylor Fritz. They will proudly represent the nation in this distinctive combined ATP and WTA tournament starting January 2 in Perth and Sydney, Australia, marking the kickoff of the tennis season's major team event.

This extraordinary tournament comprises 18 teams, with each team including one ATP and one WTA player, competing in a round-robin format across six groups of three. The leading teams from each group, alongside the best second-place team, will progress to the quarterfinals, with semifinals and finals set for January 10 and 11 in Sydney. All matches will be held on hard courts, giving top players a competitive edge ahead of the Australian Open, which is set to begin on January 18 in Melbourne.

As the defending champions, the U.S. squad secured their victory in 2025 by overcoming Poland 2-0 in the final, following their first triumph in 2023 where they defeated Italy 4-0 under a different tournament format. Last year, Germany claimed the title, narrowly edging Poland 2-1.

Poland is back as a strong contender, featuring No. 2 ranked Iga Swiatek and former top-10 ATP player Hubert Hurkacz, who currently sits at No. 73. The U.S. team, led by Gauff and Fritz, faces robust challenges in Group A, with matches lined up against Argentina on January 3 and Spain on January 5 in Perth.

Each United Cup encounter includes an ATP singles match, a WTA singles match, and a mixed doubles match, making it an exciting exhibition of tennis brilliance from both tours. With elite players striving for early-season momentum and national pride, the 2026 United Cup is bound to deliver thrilling tennis and a glimpse into the season ahead.
