In a recent interview, George Clooney opened up about a defining moment from the late 1990s that transformed his perspective on fame. He discussed how navigating public life has always been challenging and that stepping out often results in added hours of interaction, which he initially found difficult as his popularity surged.
Clooney, particularly after his breakout role in ER, frequently opted to stay indoors to escape the constant scrutiny associated with being a recognizable celebrity. However, an unexpected meeting with the legendary Paul Newman changed everything for him. Reflecting on those early pressures, Clooney recounted how this encounter altered his approach.
This story takes us back to the Warner Bros. lot during filming for ER, where Clooney, driving a studio golf cart, ran into Newman, who was then shooting Message in a Bottle. As Clooney casually approached, Newman, with a cigarette in hand, did not recognize him. At the time, Clooney was still on the rise, and Newman had no idea he was speaking to a burgeoning star.
While they chatted, others passed by, calling out “George!” repeatedly. Newman gradually recognized that Clooney was not just another actor but had become a prominent figure in the industry. The realization dawned on him as they conversed.
When Newman grasped Clooney's identity, he imparted advice that resonated with him deeply: “George, don’t let them keep you at home.” This message underscored the habit many actors have of retreating from public life amidst increasing fame, believing that isolation would safeguard their privacy. Newman’s insight indicated that withdrawing would narrow Clooney's world rather than make it easier.
This impactful exchange made it clear to Clooney that avoiding public attention was not safeguarding him; it was stifling him. He chose to embrace life rather than hide from it, taking Newman’s words to heart as he learned to manage fame without allowing it to restrict him.
Though Clooney and Newman weren’t close friends, Newman’s guidance significantly influenced Clooney’s artistic path. Clooney has often admired Newman’s craft and humorously mentioned that he has drawn inspiration from Newman multiple times, albeit “not as well.” He particularly praises Newman’s iconic role in The Verdict, which he regards as one of the greatest performances in cinema. Despite Newman’s passing in 2008 at the age of 83, his impact continues to resonate with Clooney.
Currently, Clooney is promoting his latest film, Jay Kelly, featuring a star-studded cast including Emily Mortimer, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Greta Gerwig, and Adam Sandler. The film is currently in select theaters and will be available for streaming on December 5. Clooney continues to carry Newman’s advice with him, a reminder to engage fully with life and not allow fame to create barriers.
