In a gripping rivalry contest known as the “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate,” Georgia claimed victory over Georgia Tech with a score of 92-87 in Athens, Georgia. This marks Georgia’s third consecutive triumph against their state foe, and the match delivered high energy and momentum shifts, captivating fans in what has been labeled one of the season's standout games.
Jeremiah Wilkinson and Blue Cain were crucial for the Bulldogs, each scoring 18 points. Wilkinson, a standout transfer from California, confidently sank two three-pointers and showcased impressive ball-handling. Cain matched him from the arc, going two-for-two on long-range attempts, and their sharpshooting significantly contributed to the team's overall tally.
A remarkable aspect of Georgia’s strategy was the depth displayed by their bench players, who contributed 44 points, surpassing Georgia Tech’s 26. Jordan Ross added a solid 14 points, while Somto Cyril came in with eight points, six rebounds, and three blocks, thwarting several key attempts from their rivals.
Georgia Tech proved to be a formidable opponent, with Kam Craft leading the charge, scoring 17 points and making five three-pointers, consistently keeping the score close. Lamar Washington added 16 points, while Jaeden Mustaf contributed 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds, displaying strong teamwork and shooting that kept Georgia Tech competitive until the very end.
The game featured exciting sequences from both squads. Georgia found themselves trailing early but responded with a blistering 10-0 run, maintaining control for a majority of the first half until Georgia Tech retaliated with an 8-0 run, nudging ahead briefly. Georgia reclaimed the momentum shortly after, heading into halftime with a narrow 46-45 lead.
After halftime, Georgia Tech surged with an 11-0 run, powered by Mustaf’s seven points which initially granted them a 56-50 advantage. However, Georgia quickly countered with their own 10-0 run, spearheaded by key contributions from Jake Wilkins, who netted five vital points while his father, Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, cheered from the stands.
As the score stood at 66-66 with under nine minutes left, momentum hung in the balance. Georgia seized control with a swift 7-0 run within 56 seconds, which transformed into a larger 12-2 surge, ultimately helping them secure the lead. Despite Georgia Tech scoring 13 points in a frantic effort in the last two minutes, their comeback was too late to sway the outcome.
The victory boosts Georgia’s season record to 4-0 while preserving their unblemished home record in nonconference play under coach Mike White. Remarkably, the Bulldogs have now won 31 consecutive nonconference home games during his tenure. The team's depth, scoring balance, and ability to perform under pressure indicate strong potential as the season progresses.
As they gear up for tougher opponents ahead, Georgia’s comprehensive roster and solid defensive efforts instill hope for continued success. Conversely, Georgia Tech, currently standing at 3-1, will look to build on their commendable shooting display while addressing their defensive shortcomings.
