In an exhilarating match during the DP World ILT20 Season 4, the Giants emerged victorious against the Sharjah Warriorz, clinching the win with just two balls remaining. UAE spinner Aayan Khan's impressive three wickets limited the Warriorz to 157/6, setting the stage for a dramatic final act. The rapid fifty from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and the timely contributions from Azmatullah Omarzai were critical in leading the Giants to a sensational finish.
This defeat marks the third consecutive loss for the Warriorz, while the Giants celebrated their third victory in four matches, strengthening their position in the tournament standings.
The Giants kickstarted their innings with vigor, driven by Gurbaz (50 off 36) and Vince (35 off 28). Their aggressive approach shone through as they pummeled 21 runs off Wasim Akram in the second over, rapidly posting 73/0 and placing considerable pressure on the Warriors.
While Vince's wicket fell to Sikandar Raza in the eighth over, the Warriors' bowling attack, led by Raza and Adil Rashid, ensured a competitive encounter. Collaborating in the middle overs, Gurbaz and Moeen Ali initially drove the game forward, though Moeen's innings was curtailed at the hands of Rashid in the 13th over. Gurbaz reached his fast fifty in just 34 balls, peppered with four massive sixes, before he sought another big score but was caught out.
With 47 runs needed from 39 balls, Gerhard Erasmus (15 off 18) and Omarzai (28 off 21) stabilized the situation. A pivotal six from Omarzai in the last over proved crucial, sealing the Giants' triumph even after his dismissal on the following ball.
Earlier, the Warriorz managed a steady start despite an early setback when Tom Kohler-Cadmore (7 off 8) fell to Mark Adair. Johnson Charles (36 off 32) and Kusal Mendis (23 off 15) advanced the score to 48/1 by the end of the powerplay, with Charles contributing four fours and a six, while Mendis added another four and six.
The middle overs saw the Giants' spinners dominate. Aayan Khan delivered a stunning performance, capturing 3/17 across four overs, claiming the key wickets of Charles, Mendis, and Tim David (19 off 14), leaving Warriorz struggling at 94/4 after 13.3 overs. Liam Dawson complemented Khan’s efforts with tight bowling, taking the wicket of Sikandar Raza and conceding just 21 runs in four overs. Mark Adair later dismissed Shubham Ranjane (17 off 21), holding the Warriorz to a mere 119/6 in the 18th over.
A late surge from Dwaine Pretorius (36 off 17) provided some hope, partnering with Adil Rashid (12 off 6) to score 36 runs in just 16 balls, including a hefty 20 runs in Omarzai's final over.
Aayan Khan, named Player of the Match, remarked, “It was a spinning pitch, and I'm thrilled with my wickets. Bowling four overs felt fantastic, especially after a few games off. This win is a boost to my confidence.”
Warriorz captain Tim Southee commented, “We battled till the very end. Although being 0–3 isn't optimal, there’s room for recovery. The spinners did a great job keeping us in the fight until the last overs.”
