Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill is in a tight spot as he prepares for the second Test against South Africa, commencing on November 22 in Guwahati. Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the initial Test in Kolkata. After the match concluded, he was transportated to the hospital for evaluations and was placed under observation. Fortunately, he was released the following day and has been on the mend since.
The incident has caused concern for both fans and the team’s management, given its timing in a pivotal series where India is currently behind 0-1. Although initial reports indicated he may not accompany the team, the cricket board later reassured that Gill would indeed travel to Guwahati.
In an official statement, the governing body provided updates on Gill's situation. Their medical team noted that he has been responding positively to treatment and is fit enough to join his teammates.
Nonetheless, the board conveyed that his participation in the upcoming Test remains uncertain. Medical staff will keep him under close watch, and a final decision on his availability will be made after another assessment.
While the board confirmed Gill's travel with the squad, this does not guarantee his appearance on the field. They emphasized that his long-term health and career take precedence.
Despite the official word on his travel, insider reports suggest that it is improbable for Gill to take to the field in Guwahati. Sources indicate that doctors have advised against traveling as movement could exacerbate his neck condition.
One informed source mentioned that Gill is eager to be with his teammates as captain to uplift their spirits, particularly with India battling from behind in the series. The source further highlighted that it would be nothing short of a “medical miracle” for him to play, given the risk even minor exertion poses to his long-term health.
A concluding decision on his playing status is expected on November 21, following a thorough medical review.
If Gill cannot participate in the second Test, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will likely lead the team. Pant recently made a comeback to international cricket after a lengthy injury hiatus and could be instrumental during this critical match.
India lost the first Test by a narrow margin of 30 runs at Eden Gardens, highlighting the importance of the forthcoming match for the hosts. Pant’s leadership will be vital if Gill is sidelined.
There may also be alterations in the Indian lineup for the second Test, with reports stating that Nitish Kumar Reddy has been asked to rejoin the team. Reddy, who has previously hit a Test century, was released earlier to participate in an unofficial ODI series.
As Gill's status remains uncertain and India urgently needs a strong performance to even the series, Reddy could be instrumental in solidifying the middle order.
With India trailing 0-1 in the two-match series, the Guwahati Test holds immense significance. The burden will rest heavily on the remaining players to step up in the absence of their captain and key batter.
The team’s management hopes for Gill’s swift recovery, yet they are committed to prioritizing his long-term well-being. As the squad readies for this vital encounter, attention now turns to the upcoming medical update that will be announced just prior to the Test.
