Samson Sidelined Again as Jitesh Sharma Holds His Place

Post by : Meena Hassan

Sanju Samson was omitted from India's playing XI for the fourth time in six T20Is, as Jitesh Sharma was chosen as the wicketkeeper-batter in the series opener against South Africa in Cuttack. Having shown notable performance as an opener since the last T20 World Cup, Samson was moved to the middle order when the team management confirmed Shubman Gill as the top-order batsman for India.

The change resulted in Samson having only five innings in this new role before being excluded, with Jitesh selected for his finishing capability and aptitude behind the stumps.

Former players and analysts have voiced their concerns regarding this move. Joy Bhattacharjya, a former cricket team director, pointed out that there seemed to be little reasoning for retaining Samson in the squad if Gill had already secured his opening position. He noted Samson's remarkable performance, which included three centuries as an opener in the last year, and questioned why such a skilled player would be placed in an untested middle-order role. Bhattacharjya suggested that if a finisher-wicketkeeper was necessary, someone like Jitesh or Rishabh Pant could have been chosen instead.

Statistically, Samson boasts the second-highest strike rate (182.89) among India's openers since 2023, amassing 417 runs in 13 innings, including three centuries within the past two years, underscoring his capabilities at the top of the order.

Shaun Pollock, a former South African all-rounder, also expressed concern for Samson, labeling his situation as “unfortunate.” Pollock mentioned that with Gill now being aligned alongside elite names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, he is likely to keep his position at the top. Pollock highlighted Gill’s successful partnership with Abhishek Sharma, which India aims to preserve at the opening, making it difficult for Samson to carve out a consistent role within the squad.

In conclusion, Samson's exclusion appears to stem more from team strategy and player combinations rather than his current form or skills. Despite his dependable performances, the prevailing dynamics of the team leave him on the bench until further changes occur.
