Girija Oak Speaks Out on AI-Manipulated Images

Post by : Meena Hassan

Marathi actress Girija Oak Godbole has recently gained attention for her stunning blue saree appearance and has now highlighted the troubling issue of AI-manipulated images circulating online. Taking to Instagram, she shared poignant thoughts in Hindi, English, and Marathi, reflecting on both the excitement of newfound fame and the obscure consequences that come with it.

While appreciating the recognition for her craft, she voiced her apprehensions regarding how such imagery could affect her 12-year-old son as he navigates the internet. “I have a 12-year-old son. He doesn’t yet engage with social media, but he inevitably will. As he matures, he will encounter these kinds of images. They might be trending today, but they will linger on the internet indefinitely,” she expressed.

Girija opened up about the influx of attention she has received, admitting that responses have been mixed. “Lots of friends and family are sharing posts and memes with me. Some are cleverly humorous, while others are AI-generated images that cross the line. They portray me in a way that objectifies and sexualizes, which is quite unsettling for me,” she clarified.

Recognizing the challenges of living in a digital age, she noted, “I’m active on social media myself, so I know how it operates. When something goes viral, these types of images typically follow. As long as audiences are clicking, liking, and sharing, the pattern persists. But what concerns me is the lack of boundaries — nothing seems to be sacred anymore.”

Girija concluded her remarks with a heartfelt plea to those producing and engaging with such content. “If you are among those using AI to alter images of any individual inappropriately, reconsider your actions. If you don’t create but consume this kind of content, you are also part of the issue. I sincerely urge you to think again,” she implored.

Despite these challenges, Girija noted that she's enjoying the spotlight and hopes it draws more viewers to her work. “On the bright side, I’m relishing this unexpected attention. If it leads to more viewers for my films and performances, that’s a win for me. I appreciate your ongoing support, and I’m committed to delivering captivating performances for you. See you at the movies. Thank you,” she concluded.

Girija Oak Godbole is set to appear in the upcoming web series Therapy Sherapy alongside Gulshan Devaiah, which delves into the intricacies of human emotions and relationships. However, the official release date remains unannounced.
