Australia’s experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided not to take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions scheduled for next month in Abu Dhabi. With this decision, he brings an end to a long and memorable 13-season journey in one of the world’s most popular cricket leagues. Maxwell, known for his explosive batting and sharp fielding skills, has been part of the IPL since 2012 and was one of the tournament’s most exciting players.
In the previous IPL season, Maxwell was a part of the Punjab Kings team. The franchise bought him for 42 million rupees, but he could not perform at his usual level. He managed to score only 48 runs and took four wickets in seven matches. Because of this performance, Punjab Kings released him before the auction list was prepared this year. Despite the low returns last season, Maxwell’s presence in the IPL has always been considered valuable due to his energy, attacking style and strong impact on games.
Maxwell shared an emotional message on Instagram, explaining why he chose to step away from the league. The 37-year-old player said that leaving the IPL was a big and difficult decision. He added that the IPL played an important role in shaping him both as a cricketer and as a human being. According to him, playing in India, performing in high-pressure moments, and interacting with passionate fans helped him grow in many ways.
He mentioned that the league allowed him to play with many world-class players and represent different franchises, which gave him unforgettable experiences. Maxwell said he is grateful for every moment spent in India, whether it was the excitement of winning matches, the challenges of tough games, or the love of the fans. He believes these memories will stay with him forever, even though he will not be part of the upcoming IPL cycle.
Two other major international stars also chose not to participate in the IPL 2026 season. Former South African captain Faf du Plessis and West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell have also withdrawn. Du Plessis has chosen to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), while Russell will now work with the Kolkata Knight Riders as part of their coaching staff. Their decisions show that several senior international cricketers are now exploring new roles or different leagues as they move to the next stage of their careers.
Maxwell’s exit will be felt by IPL fans because he has delivered many memorable moments over the years. Whether it was his explosive batting at the top order, his smart bowling in the middle overs, or his brilliant fielding, he brought energy that few players could match. His aggressive style and fearless attitude made him one of the IPL’s most entertaining stars.
The IPL 2026 auctions are scheduled for December 16, and Maxwell’s absence will surely leave a gap, especially for teams looking for an experienced all-rounder. Despite stepping away, Maxwell’s influence on the league, fans, and young players will remain strong. His journey in the IPL stands as an example of commitment, hard work and the spirit of T20 cricket.
