The global drive to establish artificial intelligence infrastructure is gaining momentum, with prominent tech giants making substantial financial commitments. Suppliers of the fundamental “picks and shovels” of AI—chip manufacturers, energy firms, and copper wire producers—are emerging as the significant beneficiaries as leading companies race to outpace one another.
Ben Powell, BlackRock’s chief investment strategist for APAC, emphasized this trend during Abu Dhabi Finance Week, asserting that capital expenditures related to AI show no signs of deceleration. “The capex deluge continues. The funds are very, very apparent,” he remarked, highlighting a “traditional picks and shovels capex super boom” that still possesses growth potential.
The ongoing expansion of AI is fostering a sustained increase in procurement activities, from agreements on chip supplies to commitments for power. Nvidia, a key player with its GPUs at the core of the AI transformation, briefly surpassed $5 trillion in market capitalization this year, and Microsoft along with OpenAI recently concluded a deal to back OpenAI’s fundraising efforts, with a reported valuation of $1 trillion in sight.
Globally, grid operators are facing difficulties in meeting the surging electricity demands of AI-centric data centers, as firms like Amazon and Meta allocate billions annually towards AI investments. S&P Global predicts that power demands for data centers could nearly double by 2030 due to growth in hyperscale, enterprise, and leased facilities, in addition to crypto-mining locations.
Powell also pointed out that leading tech companies are only beginning to explore credit markets for AI expansion, indicating that more capital is forthcoming. Hyperscalers are aggressively investing, motivated by the belief that falling behind could exclude them from the market. According to Powell, much of this capital is expected to flow towards infrastructure—chips, energy, and wiring—positioning these sectors as crucial beneficiaries in the present AI boom.
