Google has revealed plans to discontinue its complimentary dark web monitoring service, aimed at alerting users if their personal information appeared in data leaks on the dark web. The service will cease scanning for new breaches on January 15, 2026, and will be entirely terminated by February 16, 2026, after which all associated user data will be permanently erased.
Introduced in 2023 as part of the Google One subscription, this tool was made accessible to all Google account users in 2024. It was designed to help everyday individuals keep track of data breaches by allowing them to opt in for alerts concerning personal details such as email addresses and phone numbers found in dark web databases linked to known leaks.
User feedback significantly influenced Google's decision. While many appreciated the alerts, the company noted that users often felt uncertain about the next steps after a potential breach was flagged. As a result, Google intends to concentrate on developing security features that offer more straightforward guidance for protecting user accounts and personal information.
Users are encouraged to utilize the existing security measures within their Google accounts. These include Security Checkup, passkeys, two-step verification, Google Password Manager, and Password Checkup—tools essential for detecting weak or compromised passwords. Additionally, Google highlighted its “Results About You” feature, which enables users to locate and request the removal of personal details from Google Search results.
This announcement comes amidst heightened concerns surrounding cybersecurity. The trade of stolen credentials and personal data on the dark web remains a leading cause of identity theft and financial fraud. Consequently, many individuals are opting for independent breach-monitoring services to remain updated about data leaks affecting their personal information.
With the phase-out of its dark web monitoring tool, Google is concluding a significant chapter in its suite of privacy features. While the company asserts it will continue to enhance online safety, this change signals a shift away from dark web alerts in favor of more preventative tools focused on account security.
