Google Implements 5GB Storage Cap for Users Without Phone Verification

Google Implements 5GB Storage Cap for Users Without Phone Verification

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Google is exploring a new policy that could potentially limit free cloud storage from 15GB down to 5GB for users who opt not to add a phone number during their account setup.

Reports indicate that this test is currently taking place in select regions, particularly in certain African nations. During the registration process, users are reportedly presented with two options: retain 5GB of storage or link a phone number to unlock the full 15GB.

According to Google, the aim of this change is to enhance account security, improve service quality, and facilitate data recovery. However, this adjustment has raised privacy concerns for users reluctant to associate their phone numbers with their accounts.

Earlier this year, in March, the company modified its support pages, changing the description of the storage offer from “15GB of cloud storage” to “up to 15GB,” indicating potential future variations in the offer.

This free storage space is utilized across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. While 5GB might suffice for basic needs, it can be filled rapidly with photos, videos, documents, and email attachments. Once the storage threshold is hit, users may confront issues such as blocked incoming emails and limited upload capabilities.

Experts suggest this policy aims to deter users from establishing multiple accounts merely to gain additional free storage. Nevertheless, critics voice concerns that requiring phone numbers in exchange for storage could infringe upon online privacy and complicate anonymous internet access.

This trial coincides with a period when cloud storage expenses are increasing, prompting many users to consider alternative platforms that prioritize privacy and security.

Currently, the policy is being tested only in specific regions, with no confirmation on whether it will be rolled out globally. Existing users of Google accounts are not impacted at this point.
