A new antitrust lawsuit has been filed against Google in the United Kingdom, with allegations stating the tech giant abused its dominant market position in online display advertising.
Representing British advertisers, this legal action seeks damages of up to £3 billion (approximately $4 billion). Led by KP Law, the lawsuit claims that Google has preferentially marketed its own advertising services while restricting competition from others.
The complainants argue that Google leveraged its market power to favor its advertising tools, such as banner ads seen across various websites. Allegations suggest these practices caused advertisers to incur inflated costs for less effective advertising options.
Filed as a collective action, this case automatically includes all UK advertisers who have paid for Google’s services since October 1, 2015, unless they choose to opt out.
In response, a Google spokesperson labeled the claims as “meritless,” asserting that advertisers continue to utilize their services due to their perceived simplicity, effectiveness, and affordability.
Google has also noted that the lawsuit has not yet been officially served.
This legal challenge is a part of wider global scrutiny surrounding Google’s advertising practices. The company is currently facing multiple investigations and lawsuits in the UK, EU, and US, regarding alleged anti-competitive behavior.
Additionally, a separate lawsuit in the UK has accused Google of overcharging businesses for online advertising services, while a claim worth £13.6 billion filed on behalf of content publishers was approved for trial in 2024.
In the US, authorities are also moving to dismantle parts of Google’s advertising business to curb its market influence.
Last year, the EU imposed a notable antitrust fine of 2.95 billion euros on Google for favoring its own services over its competitors, a decision that Google has indicated it plans to appeal.
