Passengers across the United States are bracing for disruption as major carriers and regulators reshuffle schedules after an order to trim services at several of the country’s busiest airports. The directive arrives as a record-long federal shutdown places extra strain on aviation operations and traveler plans.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the measure on Wednesday, saying it was driven by safety concerns tied to understaffed air traffic control. Some 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 TSA employees have been working without pay, causing personnel gaps and mounting delays. Industry estimates indicate more than 3.2 million travelers have already been affected.
The FAA’s initial reductions, which take effect on Friday, will remove roughly 4% of scheduled flights, increasing to 5% on Saturday, 6% on Sunday and possibly reaching 10% next week if the shutdown continues. The timing is particularly acute as millions of Americans prepare to travel for Thanksgiving.
Airlines including United, American, Southwest and Frontier report a spike in customer inquiries through social channels and call centers as travelers seek information. Carriers say they will prioritize cuts on regional and non-hub routes where feasible and are working to rebook impacted passengers.
Experts warn that even short-term schedule reductions can ripple through airline revenues and the broader travel sector because of aviation’s operational sensitivities. While lower-demand windows may offer some relief, an extended shutdown could complicate travel for many in the weeks ahead.
Passengers are advised to follow airline notifications closely and keep travel plans flexible while the FAA finalizes its flight reduction orders.
