Seattle Cancels Flood Warning After Green River Levee Repair

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The National Weather Service in Seattle has canceled its flash flood warning for west-central King County after a breach in the Desimone Levee along the Green River was temporarily repaired. County crews completed emergency repair work on Monday evening, and officials confirmed that flooding is no longer expected to be a major threat. However, residents have been advised to follow remaining road closures and avoid driving through flooded areas, as a Flood Watch remains active for parts of Washington until Thursday afternoon.

King County Executive Girmay Zahilay said the levee breach caused flooding near an industrial site but did not result in any injuries. He explained that the situation was serious and sudden, but quick action by county teams helped prevent loss of life. Emergency officials said the levee was already under observation due to earlier concerns, allowing crews to respond immediately when the breach occurred.

Later on Monday, King County Emergency Management lifted evacuation alerts for residents and businesses east of the Green River in the Orillia area, covering parts of Tukwila, Renton, and Kent. Authorities confirmed it is now safe to return, though people should stay alert in case conditions change. Earlier reports warned the levee failure could lead to dangerous flash flooding, placing more than 46,000 people, including schools and a hospital, at risk. By the afternoon, that number had dropped significantly. Officials stressed that the affected zone is mainly industrial, with no residential neighborhoods currently impacted, and urged the public to remain cautious and prepared.
