Is Regional Security at Risk as Gulf Cities Face Growing Threats?

Post by : Shakul

The Gulf and wider Arab region are facing one of the most challenging periods in recent years, with security concerns and geopolitical tensions continuing to reshape the regional landscape. Speaking at the 39th virtual meeting of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, UAE Federal National Council Speaker Saqr Ghobash warned that the current situation requires urgent cooperation among Arab nations to safeguard stability, prosperity and long-term development. He stressed that the challenges confronting the region today are not temporary obstacles but significant tests that will influence the future direction of the Arab world.

Growing Concerns Over Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure

Ghobash expressed deep concern over attacks targeting Gulf cities and civilian facilities, describing them as direct threats to regional peace and security. He noted that critical infrastructure such as energy facilities, transportation networks and public utilities are essential for economic growth and social stability. Any attempt to target these assets not only affects individual nations but also risks disrupting regional trade, investment and development efforts. He emphasized that protecting civilians and critical infrastructure should remain a top priority for the international community.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

According to Ghobash, the rapidly evolving security environment demands stronger coordination among Arab states. He highlighted the importance of joint Arab action in addressing common challenges and preventing further escalation of regional conflicts. The UAE official said that stronger cooperation can help countries respond more effectively to security threats while also creating opportunities for economic growth and political stability. He called for a unified regional approach that prioritizes peace, dialogue and mutual understanding.

Commitment to Dialogue and Diplomacy

The UAE has consistently promoted diplomatic engagement and peaceful conflict resolution as the preferred path toward regional stability. Ghobash reiterated that the UAE, together with other Gulf Cooperation Council countries, has worked tirelessly to prevent the region from sliding into wider confrontations. He stated that constructive dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve disputes and build trust among nations. Stability, he said, is the foundation upon which development, investment and prosperity are built.

Respect for National Sovereignty

A major focus of Ghobash’s speech was the need to respect national sovereignty and avoid interference in the internal affairs of states. He stressed that every country has the right to protect its independence and security without external pressure. According to him, any future regional security framework must be based on mutual respect, adherence to international law and recognition of the sovereign rights of all nations. These principles, he said, are essential for maintaining peace and preventing future conflicts.

Protecting Strategic Interests and Future Stability

Ghobash urged Arab parliaments and governments to work together in protecting strategic interests, including maritime routes, energy supplies and critical infrastructure. He warned that threats to international shipping lanes and energy security could have serious consequences not only for the Middle East but also for the global economy. Strengthening cooperation on security and economic issues, he said, will help create a more resilient and stable region capable of addressing future challenges.

UAE’s Message to the International Community

Concluding his address, Ghobash reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to regional stability, peaceful coexistence and collective prosperity. He also reiterated support for the Palestinian cause and efforts to achieve a comprehensive and just peace based on international legitimacy. The UAE’s message was clear: protecting sovereignty, securing critical infrastructure and strengthening Arab cooperation are essential steps toward building a safer and more prosperous future for the region and its people.
