Guwahati Test Tweaks Schedule for Tea and Lunch Breaks

Guwahati Test Tweaks Schedule for Tea and Lunch Breaks

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The upcoming Test match between India and South Africa in Guwahati is set to implement an unusual shift in cricket traditions. Players will enjoy tea prior to lunch due to the region's unique sunrise and sunset times. This landmark event marks Barsapara Cricket Stadium’s inaugural Test match, kicking off on November 22.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has modified the schedule, taking the area's daylight hours into consideration. In winter, northeast India experiences much earlier sunlight hours. Daylight starts diminishing around 4 pm, which complicates continued play. As a result, the match will commence earlier, with modified break timings.

According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, a native of Guwahati, this adjustment was purely practical. He told ESPNcricinfo, “In winters, the sun rises and sets quite early here in northeast India. By 4 pm, daylight is almost gone, making it hard to continue playing.” His remarks indicate a responsive approach to local weather and daylight challenges.

In Guwahati, the Test will kick off half an hour ahead of the standard timing for red-ball matches in India. The preceding Test in Kolkata, running from November 14 to 18, will start at 9:30 am. In contrast, Guwahati's toss is set for 8:30 am, with play beginning at 9:00 am. This strategy aims to maximize daylight, ensuring the game wraps up before darkness falls.

The new timeline includes a first session lasting until 11:00 am, followed by a 20-minute tea break. Lunch is slated for between 1:20 pm and 2:00 pm, with the concluding session ending by 4:00 pm. This arrangement is a departure from the norm in Test cricket, where tea follows lunch, but Guwahati's adjustments cater to its specific conditions.

Excitement is palpable in Guwahati as the city readies for its inaugural Test. Cricket enthusiasts in Assam have eagerly awaited this milestone. Although Barsapara Stadium has hosted international one-day games, this will be its first red-ball match. The venue boasts modern amenities and is backed by a devoted local fanbase, heightening the experience.

Both teams will see notable player returns for this Test series. Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant makes his long-anticipated return from a foot injury, bringing energy to India’s middle order. South Africa will also welcome their captain Temba Bavuma, back from a calf injury, strengthening their batting and leadership.

This two-match series has crucial implications for the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Currently, India is positioned third while South Africa stands fourth. Each match outcome has the possibility of shifting points and affecting their chances to qualify for the finals, thus both teams will strive for strong performances.

Guwahati experiences distinct daylight conditions compared to cities like Mumbai or Delhi. In winter months, daylight starts at 5:30 am and concludes before 5:00 pm. These shorter daylight hours played a pivotal role in BCCI’s scheduling decision, ensuring players capitalize on available sunlight without battling fading light too early in the afternoon.

Thanks to the revised schedule and key players' returns, the Guwahati Test is set to be an unforgettable event. Fans can expect not only exceptional cricket but also a rare adaptation reflective of local circumstances. As Guwahati joins the roster of Indian Test venues, it celebrates a significant moment in its cricket history.
