Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has assured that the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft program is stable and progressing, even as investigations are underway regarding last week’s tragic crash at the Dubai Airshow that resulted in the death of an Indian Air Force pilot. The incident on November 21 has stirred global concern, but India’s defense aviation sector maintains that the aircraft's performance record stays robust.
At the National Security Summit organized by ANI, HAL's Chairman and Managing Director, D.K. Sunil, referred to the Dubai incident as an “unfortunate event,” emphasizing that the LCA Tejas has consistently demonstrated reliability throughout years of rigorous testing and operational use. He expressed “full confidence” in the fighter's capabilities and assured that there has not been any disruption to current production or future plans.
The Tejas had executed several high-speed maneuvers at the Dubai Airshow prior to the single-engine jet's crash around 2:10 pm local time during an aerial display. Wing Commander Namansh Syal, a decorated IAF pilot from Himachal Pradesh, tragically lost his life in the incident, which reverberated through India’s defense community. In response, the Indian Air Force has initiated a comprehensive investigation, analyzing technical logs, flight data, and communication records to determine the crash's cause.
Despite this setback, HAL affirms that timelines for Tejas production remain unchanged. The company has outstanding orders for 180 aircraft, with manufacturing capacities set to increase as new facilities become operational. Although engine deliveries from GE Aerospace have faced delays, HAL insists that overall timelines remain on track.
With significant interest in the aircraft reported across various regions, plans for exporting the Tejas are still advancing. Officials indicate that increasing capacity makes entering international markets the next logical step.
As the IAF carries out its inquiry, it has paid homage to Wing Commander Syal, describing him as a dedicated and skilled pilot who served with “unwavering commitment.” Further updates are anticipated once the investigation team finalizes its findings.
