India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has completed an intensive rehabilitation program and has been declared fit to bowl in upcoming T20 internationals. His return is expected in the five-match series against South Africa next month, marking a crucial boost for the team ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Hardik finished all Return to Play protocols between October 21 and November 30 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence and is now ready to resume competitive cricket in the shortest format.
Pandya had been sidelined since September due to a left quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup. This injury kept him out of India’s tour of Australia and the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. His absence was felt deeply in the team, particularly in T20 matches where he serves as both a finisher with the bat and a seam-bowling option.
The board had earlier indicated that Hardik would be managed as a T20-only player leading up to the World Cup. His clearance as a full-functioning all-rounder, capable of batting and bowling, is a major positive for India. His fitness now allows him to contribute fully to India’s T20 plans without being rushed back into other formats.
As part of a phased return, Hardik will now play domestic cricket for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This will allow the team to monitor how his body handles competitive workload. He is scheduled to appear in at least two matches against Punjab on December 2 and Gujarat on December 4. A possible third match against Haryana on December 6 may also be included in his comeback plan. The focus of these games will be on his bowling performance and overall match fitness.
Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha, now a member of the national selection committee, will track Hardik’s progress during these domestic games. This hands-on monitoring underscores the importance of Hardik’s role in India’s T20 structure. His performance will be closely evaluated to ensure he is ready for international matches.
The first T20I against South Africa is scheduled for December 9 in Cuttack. Subsequent games will be held in Mullanpur and other venues. If Hardik remains fit after the domestic matches, he is expected to join the national squad for the series. His return comes at a crucial time, aligning with India’s broader workload management strategy. The board aims to keep its premier all-rounder fresh and available for the T20 World Cup rather than risking fatigue by rushing him into ODIs.
Hardik’s comeback is highly anticipated by fans and experts alike. His ability to provide balance to the team, both with batting in the lower order and bowling as a seam option, makes him a key player in India’s T20 setup. The careful planning around his rehabilitation and phased return demonstrates the board’s commitment to managing player fitness and maximizing performance for major tournaments.
If he performs well in the Baroda games, Hardik Pandya will strengthen India’s squad and boost the team’s chances in the upcoming T20 series and beyond, making him a vital part of India’s cricketing plans.
