On Saturday, Indian women's cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur made history by becoming the most successful captain in women's T20 International cricket. This achievement took place during the third T20I match against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, where India secured an emphatic eight-wicket victory, claiming the five-match series with a 3-0 result.
With this triumph, Harmanpreet surpassed the previous record held by Australia's Meg Lanning. She now boasts 77 wins in 130 T20Is, alongside 48 losses and five no-results, yielding a win percentage of 58.46. Meanwhile, Lanning concluded her captaincy with 76 wins in just 100 matches, highlighting her impressive legacy.
Sri Lanka Limited to 112/7
After winning the toss, India elected to field first, and Sri Lanka struggled to find momentum against a disciplined Indian bowling line-up. Imesha Dulani managed to score the top mark of 27 off 32 balls, while Hasini Perera (25 off 18) and Kavisha Dilhari (20 off 13) were the only other players to cross the 20-run threshold. Sri Lanka ended their innings at 112/7 after 20 overs.
India's bowlers were impressive throughout the match, with all-rounder Deepti Sharma taking 3 wickets for 18 runs, making her the first Indian to achieve 150 T20I wickets. Fast bowler Renuka Singh also shone with stellar figures of 4/21, putting Sri Lanka on the back foot.
Shafali Shines in Easy Chase
The chase was spearheaded by opener Shafali Verma, who produced a stunning performance with an unbeaten 79 off just 42 balls, including 11 fours and 3 sixes. Captain Harmanpreet contributed a solid 21 off 18 balls, as India reached the target in only 13.2 overs, losing just two wickets in the process.
Shafali's performance has been a major highlight for India this year, amassing 333 runs at an average of 55.50 and a strike rate over 173 in eight T20Is in 2025, featuring three half-centuries and a top score of 79.
Focus on World Cup Success
After leading India to its first ICC Women’s World Cup title earlier this year, Harmanpreet is now setting her sights on adding a T20 World Cup trophy to her accolades. The women’s T20 World Cup is slated for June-July next year in the UK, where India will face a challenging Group A including Australia, South Africa, and Pakistan, with two additional teams set to be announced.
With remarkable leadership achievements and a squad in exceptional form, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team appears poised to pursue yet another illustrious title on the world stage.
