Prominent golfer Harris English has expressed his willingness to embrace major changes aimed at improving the PGA Tour in the years to come. Speaking at a press event before the RSM Classic in Georgia, he discussed potential revisions to the tour's schedule, including a noteworthy proposal that has surfaced recently. One idea is to initiate the PGA Tour season post-Super Bowl, enabling golf to steer clear of the NFL playoffs and attract a larger audience.
While English enjoys the early-season events in Hawaii and California, he recognizes the tour's leadership's rationale for considering this shift. He believes the overarching aim is to see more of the top players competing together, thereby enhancing the overall strength of the PGA Tour.
English highlighted that golf faces a significant challenge in drawing viewer attention when competing against American football. The NFL playoffs command millions of viewers, making it tough for golf to maintain its visibility during the initial months of the year. Moving the golf season's start to after the Super Bowl could minimize scheduling conflicts and potentially attract a larger fan base.
Furthermore, he noted that a new structure is desired where elite players do not miss out on many events, paving the way for tournaments to be more competitive and thrilling for global fans.
At 36 years old, English has been part of the PGA Tour since 2012. He acknowledged the increasing competition from younger golfers and evolving expectations but remains ready to face the challenge. His sentiment is straightforward: “Whatever it takes is what it takes.”
Although he supports the long-term vision for the tour, English admitted he would personally miss the early-season tournaments in Hawaii and California, where he has found great success and enjoys kicking off his season. Losing these events would be disappointing, yet he understands that sacrifices might be necessary for the tour's greater good.
English expressed confidence in PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp's vision, noting his extensive NFL background as a positive influence in adapting strategies to enhance the league.
Looking ahead to 2027, English anticipates a calendar where all tournaments share equal status, aiming for a mix of 20 to 22 events that could encourage top players to engage in every competition, thus making the season more thrilling and equitable.
While open to modifications, English hopes the PGA Tour will continue to champion smaller tournaments, especially during the fall season. These events, like the RSM Classic, are vital for local communities and provide fans in smaller markets access to world-class golf.
He pointed out that many areas of the U.S. seldom host major tournaments, making fall events crucial for expanding the sport's reach. English believes these tournaments should not be lost in a calendar reshuffle and hopes the tour can integrate them fittingly.
English remains fully supportive of tour leadership, eager to contribute to a prosperous future for the sport. He believes while change may be daunting, the PGA Tour must continuously evolve to endure. With innovative ideas, fresh leadership, and player backing, English is optimistic that the forthcoming years will enhance the PGA Tour, making it more stimulating and balanced for both players and audiences.
