Harry and Meghan Clarify Trademark Status of Archie and Lilibet

Post by : Shweta

Contrary to recent reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not trademarked the names of their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. This clarification arises amidst heightened public attention surrounding Meghan’s newly launched lifestyle brand.

Speculation emerged when Meghan’s brand featured a Mother’s Day collection that included references to their children’s birthdates, leading to assumptions that the couple had filed for trademark protection. However, reliable sources have indicated that there are no trademark registrations for either child's name.

The misconception was fueled by the connection of two candles from the collection to the children’s birthdays—one inspired by Archie’s May 6 birthdate and another by Lilibet’s June 4 birthdate. Additionally, earlier marketing materials had referenced their royal titles, further contributing to the confusion.

Although Archie and Lilibet were not born with royal titles, they became entitled to them in 2022 when King Charles III ascended the throne. Consequently, they are now formally known as Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex within the royal succession framework.

Unlike Prince William's children, who received royal titles at birth, Archie and Lilibet were granted their titles later, based on their status as grandchildren of the reigning monarch rather than as the direct heir's children at the time of their birth.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have publicly emphasized the significance of their family name and identity. Meghan has expressed how meaningful the name “Sussex” is to their family narrative.

In summary, while they continue to grow their brand and maintain a public presence, there is currently no initiative to trademark their children’s names. Misunderstandings appear to have arisen from marketing references rather than any formal legal actions.
