Harvard University has dropped to third place in the latest CWTS Leiden Ranking 2025 for Science, as China's Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University now occupy the top two spots, marking a significant rise in the prominence of Chinese academic institutions within global scientific research.
This year, the top nine ranks are exclusively filled by Chinese universities, indicating a notable shift from the prior dominance of American institutions. Harvard maintained a leading status for over a decade, particularly peaking from 2006 to 2009 when it held the number one rank, while the University of Toronto and the University of Michigan were ranked just behind.
Nevertheless, American universities have recently experienced a marked drop in their standings. Six notable U.S. universities that used to be in the top ten—such as the University of Michigan, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, the University of Washington-Seattle, the University of Pennsylvania, and Stanford University—are now out of the top 15. Harvard was first surpassed by Zhejiang University in the rankings for 2019-2022, and has remained in third place for the 2020-2023 cycle.
The CWTS Leiden Ranking, overseen by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands, offers in-depth insights into the scientific achievements of over 1,500 leading universities worldwide. Its Traditional Edition utilizes the Web of Science database to assess scientific output and research impact.
Among Indian institutions, VIT stands at the top, followed by IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras, highlighting India's increasing footprint in global scientific advancements.
The current ranking not only underscores the growing influence of Chinese educational institutions but also reflects the shifting landscape of global research, where well-established American universities are losing their competitive edge to swiftly progressing Asian counterparts.
