Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a commendable gesture, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini honored Shafali Verma, who played a crucial role in India’s triumph at the Women’s World Cup. The award ceremony, held at the CM’s residence, Sant Kabir Kutir, saw Saini present the talented cricketer with a shawl, a cheque of ₹1.5 crore, and a prestigious ‘Grade A’ sports gradation certificate.

During the event, Saini expressed his admiration for Shafali’s impressive achievements and declared her as the brand ambassador for the Haryana State Women’s Commission. He noted that her extraordinary success serves as a significant source of inspiration for young athletes across the region, reflecting pride in her contributions to the sport.

Posting on social media, Saini shared, “I had the pleasure of meeting Shafali Verma, a great pride of Haryana and part of the victorious team in the Women’s Cricket World Cup. I sincerely congratulate her on this remarkable achievement.”

He emphasized that the Haryana government’s salute to Shafali through the financial reward and certification signifies the state’s deep appreciation for sporting talents. “This recognition includes a ₹1.50 crore cash award and a ‘Grade A’ certificate in honor of her phenomenal performance. We hope this motivates other budding athletes in Haryana to aim high,” he remarked.

Saini further acknowledged that Shafali’s achievements resonate deeply not just within the borders of Haryana but for the entire nation, expressing, “Through her unwavering dedication, Shafali has brought pride to both Haryana and India. Her journey encourages every girl in the state to pursue their dreams. I wish her continued success in future competitions.”

The CM also highlighted the government's ongoing commitment to nurturing young sports talent, noting the establishment of approximately 2,000 sports nurseries across Haryana. “We're dedicated to making Haryana a top state for sports by fostering talent from an early age,” he said.

During her acceptance speech, Shafali Verma conveyed her gratitude to the Haryana government for the recognition and support. “Winning the World Cup was a euphoric experience. The sports culture in Haryana is vibrant, and I appreciate the encouragement from everyone. I thank the Chief Minister and the government for this honor,” she expressed.

Originating from Rohtak, Shafali joined the Indian squad as a substitute for an injured player before the crucial semifinal against Australia. While she faced challenges in the semifinal, her pivotal performance in the final against South Africa — scoring 87 runs and securing 2 wickets — was integral to India’s 52-run win, clinching the World Cup title.

Her match-winning prowess earned her the ‘Player of the Final’ accolade, further marking a milestone in the history of Indian cricket and for Haryana. Fans, coaches, and teammates celebrated Shafali’s fearless batting style and resilience throughout the competition.

The young cricketer’s evolution from the cricket fields in Rohtak to recognized international player has been characterized by diligence and ambition. With her bold batting approach and calm demeanor in high-stakes situations, Shafali stands as an emblem of hope for aspiring female sportswomen in India, motivating many to follow their aspirations and chase their dreams.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Saini, Haryana maintains its reputation for nurturing world-class athletes across various sports categories, including wrestling, boxing, cricket, and hockey. The acknowledgement of Shafali Verma forms part of the state’s larger initiative to uplift and recognize sporting talent, especially among women.

This celebration also underscores the commitment of the state towards women’s empowerment and increasing gender equality in the arena of sports. By appointing Shafali as the brand ambassador of the Haryana State Women’s Commission, the government aims to leverage her story to encourage young girls to pursue their dreams bravely and confidently.

As the event wrapped up, Shafali aspired to continue her journey representing India and adding to the nation’s accolades. “Winning the World Cup was a dream fulfilled; however, I wish to keep advancing and bring further honor to my country in future matches,” she commented with enthusiasm.

With a burgeoning list of accomplishments and support from her home state, Shafali Verma emerges as one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket, embodying the essence of excellence and perseverance that characterizes Haryana’s sports culture.
