Pakistan has officially excluded batsman Hasan Nawaz from their upcoming ODI and T20I squads scheduled later this month. Instead of joining the national team, he has been reassigned to play in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. This decision marks a notable shift in selection choices, especially considering Nawaz's previous rise as a promising young talent for the nation.
No replacement has been appointed for him in the ODI setup, while Fakhar Zaman has been brought in to fill his spot for the T20I matches. This move reflects the selectors' inclination towards seasoned players as the team gears up for a busy roster of international contests.
Nawaz drew attention earlier this year in March when he scored a remarkable T20I century against New Zealand at Eden Park. This powerful right-handed batter quickly established himself as one of Pakistan’s most formidable middle-order hitters, particularly during critical phases of the game.
Despite this early promise, Nawaz’s journey in the national team has been tumultuous, with consistency issues arising as he recorded five ducks in his first ten T20Is. These performances hinted at his inexperience, while also showcasing flashes of significant potential.
His profile grew during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) where he played a pivotal role in leading the Quetta Gladiators to the final, finishing as the tournament’s third-highest run-scorer with a striking strike rate exceeding 162. His ability to effortlessly hit sixes endeared him to fans and drew comparisons to some of Pakistan’s most prominent strikers.
However, recent weeks have seen a decline in his performances. During the Asia Cup, he was benched in subsequent matches in favor of Hussain Talat, a player characterized by his more consistent, if less aggressive, batting style, signaling a potential loss of faith from the management in Nawaz's temperament.
In ODIs, he has participated in just four games, three against the West Indies in August, boasting an average of 56.33. Nevertheless, one risky dismissal, when he charged down the pitch against spinner George Linde and was stumped, raised eyebrows regarding his match awareness.
His T20I form has also recently dipped. In eight of his latest outings, he has managed to surpass double figures only once, with an average below seven. This alarming drop in performance has further complicated the selectors' justification for including him in the roster.
Pakistan's international series kicks off with three ODIs against Sri Lanka on November 11, followed by a T20I tri-series involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe starting November 17. This tri-series will yield Pakistan’s first-ever multi-team T20I tournament, offering a crucial platform for both promising and experienced players.
The ODI squad is set to include:
Shaheen Shah Afridi (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Faisal Akram, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, and Salman Ali Agha.
The T20I tri-series roster comprises:
Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abdul Samad, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Naseem Shah, Sahibzada Farhan (wk), Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Khan (wk), and Usman Tariq.
By sending Hasan Nawaz back to domestic competitions, team management is likely aiming to help him regain his form and confidence. Competing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy may provide him the chance to refine his shot selection and cultivate innings during high-pressure situations.
With Fakhar Zaman's inclusion, Pakistan bolsters its top-order with valuable experience while emerging players like Saim Ayub and Usman Khan seek to strengthen their presence in limited-overs formats.
Although Hasan Nawaz's near-term prospects for the national team seem uncertain, he is still recognized as one of the country’s standout young batters. A strong performance in domestic events could pave his path back into contention. Selectors have indicated that while his potential and power-hitting capabilities are appreciated, a focus on consistency and better decision-making is crucial for his return.
