Australia received uplifting news on Tuesday as Josh Hazlewood resumed training in the nets, marking his recovery from a hamstring injury that had sidelined him for the opening Ashes Test in Perth. Hazlewood's return significantly strengthens the Australian bowling lineup as the team gears up for the upcoming fixtures.
In parallel, Pat Cummins was observed bowling with a pink ball at Cricket Central in Sydney, continuing his recovery from a back injury. Cummins aims to participate in the day-night Ashes Test at the Gabba, progressively increasing his fitness and workload under careful observation. Both players practiced while New South Wales faced off against Tasmania in their Sheffield Shield match.
Utilizing a red ball, Hazlewood's training sessions indicate his primary objective is to refine his fitness and technique. Although he’s not expected to join the squad at the Gabba, Adelaide is expected to be his comeback venue. Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald expressed optimism about Hazlewood's participation later in the series, stating, "He'll be available at some point during the series. We need to complete some early rehabilitation, but we're expecting him to contribute to the series."
Cummins has shown significant improvement during his net sessions in Perth prior to the opening Test. McDonald emphasized the importance of building strength in Cummins’ back while maintaining his bowling intensity. The selectors will gauge Cummins' ability to manage the demands of Test cricket, particularly as matches in the current series may not always span the full five days.
The Ashes schedule includes well-timed early Tests, with shorter gaps as the series progresses. After Adelaide, there are merely four days between the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and the New Year's Test in Sydney if they extend to the full five days. The day-night match in Brisbane introduces additional challenges, as the pink ball generally results in fast-paced, high-stakes play.
In recent Sheffield Shield matches, Queensland and Victoria noted ten wickets fell during a single night session, showcasing how rapidly games can shift under light. Young bowler Xavier Bartlett made a mark with 4 for 35 in the second innings and a career-best 72 with the bat, proving he could serve as a valuable pace option if Hazlewood and Cummins return. Michael Neser remains available as a backup bowler with experience in pink-ball Tests.
Selectors are also hopeful for Jhye Richardson's comeback later in the series post-shoulder surgery. He recently bowled 20 overs for the Cricket Australia XI against England Lions at Lilac Hill and will play for Australia A in Brisbane next week. Richardson remarked that the session was crucial for physical readiness. "The shoulder’s feeling very good, and it’s all part of the process to prepare for four and five-day cricket," he noted.
With Hazlewood, Cummins, and potentially Richardson returning, Australia's pace attack is positioned strongly to take on England in the forthcoming Ashes Tests. The blend of recovery, intensive training, and diligent workload management promises a robust bowling unit while reducing injury risks.
The Australian team continues to prioritize fitness, match preparedness, and strategic planning, giving fans hope for a competitive and well-rounded side in the ongoing Ashes series.
