Australian speedster Josh Hazlewood is encountering a fresh injury issue, casting doubt on his availability for the third Ashes Test set to occur in Adelaide. Recovering from a hamstring strain, Hazlewood has now experienced discomfort in his Achilles, which has postponed his full return to training, as confirmed by Cricket Australia on Friday.
The quick bowler missed the initial Ashes Test in Perth and the ongoing second Test in Brisbane. Having recently started bowling in the nets, expectations for his return were rising, but this new low-grade Achilles problem necessitates further rest before he can resume running and bowling by next week.
Meanwhile, regular skipper Pat Cummins has been absent from the first two Tests due to a back injury, yet he is a strong candidate for the Adelaide match beginning December 17. In his absence, Australia has utilized a relatively inexperienced pace attack at the Gabba, featuring Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and seasoned Mitchell Starc, who, at 35, still leads the charge.
As Australia leads the five-Test Ashes series 1-0, Hazlewood’s fitness is under stringent scrutiny as selectors contemplate their options for this pivotal third Test. Should he remain sidelined, it could thrust greater responsibility on the newer bowlers and Starc, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning ahead of the Adelaide encounter.
This situation underscores the difficulties Australia faces in navigating injuries among crucial players while striving to maintain their Ashes momentum, as fans and analysts eagerly track Hazlewood's recovery and the team's strategies for the series ahead.
