Herbal Tea: A Healthier Choice Over Chai During Delhi's Pollution Season

Herbal Tea: A Healthier Choice Over Chai During Delhi's Pollution Season

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

With Delhi grappling with severe air pollution, health experts urge residents to prioritize their well-being. The dense smog, laden with harmful particles, impacts not just respiration but also drains one's energy. While many reach for a comforting cup of chai for a boost, dietician Payal Sharma suggests a superior alternative: herbal tea.

Payal Sharma, a renowned dietician at Dharamshila Narayana Superspecialty Hospital, emphasizes that herbal tea can prove to be a more beneficial choice than traditional tea during times of heavy pollution. While chai provides a caffeine kick for immediate energy, it fails to assist the body in combating the adverse effects of pollution. Conversely, herbal teas actively promote the body’s detoxification processes and bolster immunity.

Chai has become a staple in daily routines—be it morning rituals, short breaks, or evening relaxation. However, Ms. Sharma warns of caffeine’s dehydration effect, which can deplete vital nutrients. In a toxic atmosphere, the body craves hydration and antioxidants rather than stress-inducing substances.

Herbal teas, derived from natural elements like tulsi, ginger, turmeric, mint, and chamomile, offer therapeutic benefits and help eliminate toxins. Ms. Sharma states, “Herbal tea cleanses your system, supports lung health, and enhances immunity. Its caffeine-free nature ensures that you stay hydrated and calm.”

She also recommends herbal teas loaded with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits during pollution season. Some effective options include:

  • Tulsi Tea: Aids lung health by alleviating congestion and shielding against pollution-related infections.
  • Ginger Tea: Promotes digestion while clearing the throat and chest.
  • Turmeric Tea: Contains curcumin, known to combat inflammation and support recovery from pollution.
  • Peppermint Tea: Refreshes and aids the respiratory system.
  • Chamomile Tea: Calms nerves and aids restful sleep after exposure to pollution.

Ms. Sharma highlights that pollution generates harmful free radicals leading to cellular damage. Herbal teas, rich in antioxidants, help expel these radicals, shielding the body in the process. Regularly consuming 2 to 3 cups of herbal tea can naturally elevate energy levels and alleviate symptoms like coughs and fatigue linked to smog.

In addition, she encourages hydration throughout the day and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to enhance the body’s ability to combat pollution-related damage. Reducing caffeinated drinks is crucial, as caffeine can exacerbate dehydration and stress.

While chai isn’t detrimental when consumed moderately, substituting a few cups with herbal tea can significantly improve health during this period. “Beginning with herbal tea in place of evening chai can yield noticeable benefits in energy and comfort,” she advises.

With rising pollution concerns, health professionals in Delhi recommend lifestyle adjustments such as consuming cleaner foods and opting for indoor exercises alongside detoxifying beverages like herbal teas.

In a city burdened by poor air quality, making these minor adjustments can safeguard health and enhance immunity. With their blend of warmth and protective qualities, herbal teas are a vital asset when the outside air is rife with pollutants.
