Rising Travel Costs Impact World Cup Fans at US Stadiums

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Fans eager to witness the upcoming World Cup matches in the United States will need to rethink their budgets, as transportation costs for certain venues have skyrocketed.

Travelers from New York City heading to MetLife Stadium will find themselves shelling out roughly $150 for a round-trip train ticket on match days, a stark leap from the typical $12.90 fare for the quick 15-minute journey from Manhattan’s Penn Station.

As the home ground for the New York Giants and Jets, MetLife Stadium is slated to host eight World Cup matches, including the finale on July 19. With limited parking options, authorities expect about 40,000 fans to rely on public transit for each match.

Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey backed the fare increase, asserting that it’s essential to avoid long-term financial burdens on the state’s transportation system. Officials estimate the overall cost for fan transportation during the tournament at around $62 million, with only $14 million funded from external sources.

“We’re not engaging in price gouging—this is simply cost recovery,” remarked NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri.

Different Strategies in Other Cities

Transportation prices vary in other host cities. Fans heading to Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts face express bus fares of $95 and round-trip train tickets at $80—roughly four times the normal rate.

Conversely, cities such as Los Angeles and Philadelphia have committed to keeping standard transit fares low, backed by around $100 million in federal aid intended to enhance travel services during the event.

More budget-friendly alternatives are available elsewhere; for instance, Kansas City offers round-trip shuttle services for $15, while Houston is maintaining fares from $1.25 to $4.50 for buses and rail.

FIFA Questions Fare Increases

The surge in prices has led to a dispute with FIFA, which argues that previous agreements mandated free transportation for fans. The organization expressed astonishment at New Jersey’s choice to raise fares, highlighting its role in securing federal financing for the host cities.

Additionally, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has criticized the fare increase, deeming it excessively high for such a brief journey.

Few Options for Attending Fans

For fans seeking alternative travel options, costs remain steep. Parking near the stadium, including at the American Dream Mall, is limited and approximated at $225 per space, further inflating the cost for attendees.
