In a landmark achievement, Temwa Chawinga, the forward for the Kansas City Current, secured the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the second consecutive year during the NWSL’s inaugural award ceremony at San Jose Civic Center.
Chawinga showcased remarkable talent this season, netting 15 goals and claiming the NWSL Golden Boot for the second time. She had previously set a league record with 20 goals last season, establishing herself as an indispensable asset to her team.
Upon receiving the prestigious award, Chawinga expressed her gratitude toward her teammates, emphasizing that her accomplishment stemmed from their collective effort and commitment throughout the season. Her recognition on stage symbolized a shared victory.
Only one other player, Sam Kerr, has achieved the feat of two NWSL MVP awards, having secured hers in 2017 and 2019, along with three consecutive Golden Boots in that span. Chawinga’s dual MVP accolades position her among the legends of the league.
This year’s MVP shortlist also included commendable talents such as Bia Zaneratto, Delphine Cascarino, Esther González, and Manaka Matsukubo, all of whom made significant contributions during the season.
The MVP was selected using a weighted voting approach, with players accounting for 40% of the total, coaches and officials contributing 25%, while both media and fans made up 25% and 10%, respectively. This system aimed to embrace a comprehensive viewpoint from various factions within the league.
Bev Yanez of Racing Louisville was honored as the NWSL Coach of the Year, propelling her team to its best performance and playoff berth. She acknowledged the belief and support of her players in her journey, stressing the necessity of perseverance despite self-doubts.
Yanez triumphed over Vlatko Andonovski of Kansas City Current, who led his squad to unprecedented heights this season.
Kansas City also celebrated Lorena, earning the Goalkeeper of the Year title for her standout contributions to the team.
Additional accolades were awarded, including Defender of the Year to Tara McKeown from the Washington Spirit. This award was particularly meaningful to her as she transitioned from a forward to a center-back.
Lilly Reale of Gotham FC claimed the Rookie of the Year title, playing a vital role in her team’s playoff success.
The Lauren Holiday Impact Award was given to Sam Hiatt of the Portland Thorns for her charitable efforts with Candlelighters Oregon, accompanying a $50,000 grant to the organization.
This year’s awards ceremony highlighted the NWSL’s progression, showcasing the talents of its players and their far-reaching influences both on and off the pitch. Temwa Chawinga’s historic MVP win epitomizes her enduring excellence and the promising future she is crafting in women’s soccer.
