In a noteworthy display of talent, Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladeshi cricket icon, clocked a century during his 100th Test match against Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. At 38 years old, Rahim has joined the elite group as the 11th player in cricketing history to achieve this remarkable feat, alongside legends such as Colin Cowdrey, Javed Miandad, Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith, Joe Root, and David Warner.
Starting the first day at 99 not out, Rahim displayed impressive composure as he began the second day’s play. He took his time to find his rhythm and celebrated reaching the landmark with a well-earned single. The roar of the crowd filled the stadium as Rahim not only became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to play 100 Tests but also secured a century in this significant match.
Demonstrating remarkable skill and patience throughout his innings, Rahim became the backbone of the team after three early wickets fell. He took 67 balls to strike his first boundary, an elegant drive off Matthew Humphreys, before hitting a boundary to bring up his half-century at the start of the third session, showcasing his concentration and finesse.
Combining caution with calculated aggression, Rahim swept Humphreys for four and sent a delivery from legspinner Gavin Hoey to the boundary. He carefully moved towards the nineties with well-placed singles and excellent shot selection, captivating fans and teammates alike. His innings concluded at 106 runs when he miscalculated a delivery from Humphreys, but his accomplishment solidified a significant chapter in Bangladesh cricket.
A pre-match ceremony honoring Rahim, attended by family and former captains Akram Khan and Habibul Bashar, made the occasion even more special. Beyond personal milestones, his performance provided much-needed stability amidst early batting woes, boosting the team's morale.
This century epitomizes Rahim's 20-year cricketing journey characterized by patience, resilience, and mastery. As the first Bangladeshi to reach 100 Tests and score a century in that match, he has made an indelible mark on the sport. Both fans and cricket analysts have hailed his innings as a true showcase of temperament and durability.
