Ukraine Marks Milestone by Targeting Russian Submarine Using Drones

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Ukraine achieved a significant milestone by successfully targeting a Russian Kilo-class attack submarine with underwater drones, as confirmed by officials on Monday. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) executed this operation using its "Sub Sea Baby" drones aimed at a submarine docked in Novorossiysk, a crucial Black Sea base for Russia. This port has seen many Russian naval assets relocated to protect them from Ukrainian strikes.

The SBU released footage showing a substantial explosion near the submarine's pier, which was later verified by Reuters to be from the Novorossiysk port area. Alexander Kamyshin, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, stated via social media platform X that this event marks the first instance in history where an underwater drone has effectively neutralized a submarine.

Despite having a limited naval fleet, Ukraine has increasingly utilized underwater drones and long-range missiles to pose challenges to Russia’s formidable Black Sea Fleet. The submarine struck in Novorossiysk carries at least four Kalibr-type cruise missiles, integral to Russia's recent assaults on Ukraine that have significantly damaged the country's energy infrastructure. Relocated from Crimea, this vessel became a target after Ukraine's persistent offensives on Russian positions in Sevastopol.

The Ukrainian navy deemed this submarine assault a crucial milestone in the ongoing naval conflict with Russia. Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian navy, emphasized that hitting such a challenging target as a submarine indicates a pivotal advancement in Ukraine's naval combat capabilities. He remarked that repairing the damaged submarine would pose significant challenges, needing above-water maintenance and leaving it open to further strikes. This incident represents a loss for Russia, with one of its four submarines stationed in Novorossiysk now incapacitated, three of which carry Kalibr missiles.

This attack unfolds amidst delicate peace discussions mediated by the US, with Ukrainian officials wary of potential compromises to their sovereignty. By demonstrating the ability to inflict damage on valuable Russian naval assets, Ukraine seeks to bolster its negotiation stance and reaffirm its commitment to defending its territory.

Recently, Ukraine has stepped up its assaults on Russian military and industrial targets, leveraging cutting-edge long-range drone and missile technology to offset Russia's military dominance. The effectiveness of the "Sub Sea Baby" drones in Novorossiysk underscores Ukraine's increasing skill in underwater and naval warfare, marking a notable progression in the evolving conflict in the Black Sea region.
