In a strong showing for Napoli, Rasmus Hojlund netted two goals to lead his team to a 2-0 triumph over Cremonese on Sunday, further solidifying their position in the Serie A race. This victory places Napoli just one point behind the leaders, AC Milan.
Earlier in the day, AC Milan maintained their lead with a decisive 3-0 win against Hellas Verona, totaling 35 points. Napoli trails closely with 34 points, while Inter Milan, situated in third with 33 points, could leapfrog both teams if they secure a win against Atalanta later in the day.
Fresh off their Italian Super Cup win against Bologna, where they triumphed 2-0, Napoli demonstrated no lingering fatigue as they approached this match with intensity.
Hojlund struck early, finding the net in the 13th minute by capitalizing on a deflected shot that fell into his path, slotting it home from close range.
As halftime approached, he doubled his tally during stoppage time, finishing expertly after seizing a loose ball near the back post, effectively sealing the victory for his team.
Despite several opportunities in the second half, Napoli couldn't increase their lead further, but Hojlund’s performance stood out as he now boasts six goals and two assists in 12 Serie A matches since joining earlier this season. He acknowledges that his success is largely due to the support from his talented teammates.
Napoli’s manager, Antonio Conte, commended Hojlund’s swift development, emphasizing his youth and potential: “He is still very young with significant room for growth. He’s becoming integral to our tactics, and there’s still much improvement ahead,” said Conte. “In my system, the striker holds a pivotal role, and Rasmus continues to evolve.”
With this victory, Napoli remains a formidable contender in the Serie A title race as the season unfolds.
