Keisuke Honda, the renowned Japanese footballer, has voiced his belief in Japan's potential to triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking at the AVCJ Private Equity Forum in Hong Kong, he emphasized that the national team could reach the semifinals or even contend for the championship.
Honda noted the strength of Japan's players, asserting, "They have the potential to become at least the best four in the World Cup next year, maybe champion. There is nothing impossible, and they have a lot of good players now so I hope they are going to make it."
Japan has already booked its place in the 2026 tournament, set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Their strong performance in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where they overthrew leading European teams like Spain and Germany to advance to the Round of 16, showcased their rising competitiveness.
At 39, Honda is celebrated as one of Japan’s top football talents from the early 2000s, having represented prestigious clubs including AC Milan in Serie A. Throughout his international career, he participated in three World Cups, playing a crucial role in highlighting Japan's presence in global football.
In addition to his football achievements, Honda has carved a path in the business realm as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He co-founded X&KSK, an investment firm focused on Japan, which raised around 15.3 billion yen in its first fund earlier this year, investing in sectors like technology and biotech. He also partnered with actor Will Smith to establish Dreamers VC in the U.S.
Despite diverting his focus toward business ventures, Honda has not abandoned his football aspirations. His ambitions now include becoming a premier football coach and potentially guiding Japan to a World Cup victory as a coach. He stated, "My dreams are two things now, to be the best investor in the world and the best coach in the world, which means becoming a champion of the World Cup as a coach."
Honda’s insights reflect his confidence in Japan's football growth and potential on the world stage. He highlighted the significance of teamwork, talent nurturing, and strong leadership within the team. With an emerging generation of talented players and experience on international platforms, Japan aims to leave a notable mark at the 2026 World Cup.
Football enthusiasts and analysts have praised Honda's positive outlook, noting Japan's steady progression in recent World Cups. His expertise and possible future role as a coach could enhance the team's prospects even further.
Honda’s vision embodies both faith in the current Japanese team and his aspiration to impact football as a player, eventual coach, and mentor. His commitment to excellence spans both his business and football endeavors.
