Hong Kong Inferno Raises Alarm on Bamboo Scaffolding Risks

Hong Kong Inferno Raises Alarm on Bamboo Scaffolding Risks

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Hong Kong, Nov 27, 2025: A tragic fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Tai Po has claimed at least 44 lives, spotlighting the dangers associated with bamboo scaffolding. The flames spread swiftly across green construction mesh and bamboo poles, leading to the collapse of parts of the building.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it rapidly devoured the bamboo scaffolding. This traditional material, prized for its flexibility and cost-effectiveness, is still widely used in Hong Kong and China, despite the increasing presence of metal scaffolding. Approximately 2,500 registered bamboo scaffolding masters continue to operate in the city.

Onlookers reported hearing heavy gunfire as the fire raged, also igniting the protective mesh intended to catch falling debris. In response, Hong Kong's government has established a task force to examine the incident, particularly whether the building and scaffolding conformed to fire safety standards.

Chief Executive John Lee emphasized the government's commitment to holding the accountable parties responsible and reassessing safety regulations. Labour Secretary Chris Sun confirmed that a ban on bamboo scaffolding is not imminent, but stricter fire-retardant standards for construction nets will be implemented.

Recent years have seen multiple fires linked to bamboo scaffolding, including those at Chinachem Tower and various residential buildings. Experts caution that many structures still use flammable materials, endangering both workers and residents.

In light of these events, the Hong Kong Labour Department has mandated that scaffolding nets and protective materials comply with recognized fire-retardant standards. Advocacy groups have raised the alarm over poor safety practices in the construction industry, advocating for more thorough inspections.

As the city grieves for the victims, authorities are expected to enhance safety protocols and thoroughly review the use of bamboo scaffolding in public and residential construction projects.
