In one of Hong Kong’s deadliest blazes in recent history, at least 128 lives were lost when a fire tore through Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, located in the city’s New Territories, on Wednesday. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
A viral video has ignited speculation, suggesting the fire may have originated from a cigarette. This clip, circulated by RT India, purportedly shows workers smoking near the building’s exterior moments before the flames erupted. Officially, however, authorities are still investigating the precise cause.
The large scale of the disaster has brought to the forefront concerns regarding Hong Kong’s prevalent use of bamboo scaffolding. Many community members and specialists are questioning whether these traditional materials may have exacerbated the fire's rapid spread. Bamboo scaffolding, a remnant of long-standing construction techniques in Asia, continues to be a common sight, particularly for ongoing renovations in the metropolis.
At the time of the incident, all eight towers of Wang Fuk Court were enveloped in bamboo scaffolding and green netting as part of a renovation that commenced last year. The rapidly igniting fire climbed swiftly, aided by the dry bamboo and mesh, while reports from the Hong Kong government revealed that falling bamboo further accelerated the fire's expansion. This has intensified calls to transition from bamboo to safer metal scaffolding alternatives.
Initial inquiries suggest that the flames began in the protective netting on lower levels of a building and quickly escalated upwards. Security chief Chris Tang reported that highly combustible foam boards used in the renovation contributed to the inferno.
In the wake of this tragedy, authorities have detained eight individuals linked to the renovation. This group includes seven men and one woman, aged between 40 and 63, many of whom are involved in scaffolding and project management, as noted by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
This incident has reignited discussions surrounding building safety codes in Hong Kong, particularly concerning the ongoing use of bamboo scaffolding in densely populated areas. Both residents and officials are now advocating for tougher safety regulations to avert similar disasters in the future.
As Hong Kong grieves the loss of life from this tragic fire, pressure mounts on officials to clarify the events leading up to the incident and to enforce stricter safety measures in all active construction sites throughout the city.
